Role in SMGL: Cauldron dev.

Age: I was born in 1981.

Location/Country: Currently USA

When did you first start using Linux and why?
I started using linux around 1998. I was sick of "the other OS" (I had been using Windows for about 10 years, and had seen some of the less-documented portions of the OS), and wanted to try something else. That, and it was either linux or one of the *bsds if you wanted to have a serious programming environment on x86 without shelling out major cash (I've been a poor/starving student for quite some time now).

How long have you been using the SMGL distribution?
Since early 2006.

What piqued your interest in SMGL initially?
I have always preferred doing things myself. For one reason, it means that nothing will be screwed up unless I screw it up, and I will get exactly what I want (no more, no less). Also, this means I will be learning a lot more, since if someone does it for you then you learn nothing from it (unless they are really kind enough to explain the inner workings of how they did it, but that doesn't happen often). For another, I don't like unnecessary obfuscation. I started with RH, which obfuscates it's configs behind the GUIs it uses. Then I switched to slackware, which I liked, but I did an upgrade and my compiler toolchain broke. :-( After that happened, I decided I wanted something that could handle dependency resolution, and would build from source (I was doing a lot of the ./configure && make && make install on Slack anyway...). So, I switched to Gentoo (hadn't found out about SMGL at that time). Gentoo was good in its early days, but then things snowballed, and I didn't like the direction it was going in. I was thinking about going to LFS when I found SMGL (why had you eluded me so long?!), and knew my search was over :-D.

What future do you personally see for SMGL?
Personally, I'd like it to just continue in the direction it's already going in. I don't mind if there isn't a huge userbase. I use it, and that's enough for me. However, I hope that it either keeps or expands the present devel user-base. SMGL has quite a few well-dedicated developers, and IMO that's what really makes this distribution strong. The devs are all dedicated to pushing the distro where the distro needs to go, not where they might personally want it to be at the expense of others. And they have done some fantastic work thus far, so I'd like to see that continue.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Education/Career/Skills?
I am currently a PhD student studying Linguistics (what am I doing here? :-P). I intend to teach linguistics at the college level (not like it's taught anywhere else) after I graduate (eventually...). I assume skills is in reference to computer skills, so I won't list irrelevant things here ;-). I am proficient in assembly language (mainly x86, but can handle others as well), C/C++, have done Java but prefer not to, and am alright with perl and bash.

Any personal messages for the Source Mage users out there?
I think this is the best distribution of linux. It's like LFS on steroids: all the personal configurability and control, but with a package management system that's just as controllable. That, and the package management is in bash, so it's both quick and portable without a lot of dependencies. As a final note, the community is quite helpful and welcoming. Come join the family! :-)

vi or emacs?
vim/vi

KDE or GNOME?
I don't use X much these days, but when I have to I use dwm. Really I just use screen :-D

BSD or GPL?
I don't have a preference, as long as it's in favor of open source.

What other OS programs/software have you worked on?
Just personal projects. I occasionally dabble in OpenGL coding.

Do you have any family?
while(family_tree) { fork(); }

What other hobbies?
Too many to list here. If you're interested, just ask me.

What kind of car do you drive? Or what is your dream car?
No car, and not sure if I will really ever want one. I like my legs.

Please attach a recent photograph of yourself - if you're brave enough ;=)
Call me a coward :-P
